More about Gwangju
 
Every two years from 1995, Gwangju has hosted the ‘Gwangju Biennale’, a global art festival, while numerous events of different sizes and scopes, such as the city’s annual Kimchi Festival and the Jeong Yul Seong International Music Festival, complement Gwangju’s cultural calendar. From 2009, Gwangju will also be home to 3 major international festivals, one of which is the Gwangju Festival of Light.

Gwangju is also a city of education. There are 414,239 students, or 29.4% of the population, in elementary school through university levels. 7 colleges, 9 universities and 42 graduate schools are located in Gwangju, making it an ideal venue for university sports.

Gwangju is in the process of transforming itself into a new metropolitan with over 2 million residents.
As of 2007, the population of Gwangju reached 1.42 million, building on a population increase which has continued since 2000. In 2013, we expect the population of Gwangju to reach the 2 million mark.
